Quote of the day

I've been combing through books on dyslexia. Some are good, some are not so good. Here's one I find downright repulsive. Overcoming Dyslexia: A New and Complete Science-Based Program for Reading Problems at Any Level by Sally Shaywitz, M.D. The book is a whopping 414 pages. I'm at page 211, and I have not seen a shadow of the "new and complete science-based program" which she boasts. Maybe there will be a 828-page sequel? All she really cares to emphasize, over and over, is how qualified she is in giving her expert opinion on the subject.

Here's an interesting quote from the book, which I think I ought to share with those of you who are homeschooling.

"I strongly caution parents against setting out to teach their child all of the phonics rules or a complete reading curriculum. Teaching reading is a complex task and one that should be left to a professional."

Danger! Stop teaching your children to read! You can incur permanent damage to their brains and thus ruin them for life. In fact, in some cases catastrophic explosions have occurred in households where parents attempt to teach reading without previous professional training.

  1. Me learn my kids good how to read!

Wow, she pretty much call us parents slack-jawed mouth breathing morons. Well, maybe not, but I have seen the level of education needed to be a teacher and I think any educated well read person could easily compete.
